The Ma Tso Lung in the North East New Territories, Hong Kong

New Territories

From remote mountains to pristine beaches, a spectacular rural escape

Covering around 70 percent of Hong Kong SAR’s total land area, New Territories offers a breathtaking rural contrast to the densely packed urban environment elsewhere. Incorporating two distinct yet equally stunning parts, this lesser frequented, somewhat underrated area reveals a totally different perspective to the more frenetically paced Hong Kong Island and Kowloon.

Fanning out from Kowloon’s uppermost fringes to the Mainland China border, the northern hinterland reveals a magnificent blend of landscapes, from majestic mountains and vast farmlands to scenic coastal areas. The New Territories second area encompasses Hong Kong’s scattered archipelago and 260 outlying islands, blessed with pristine white sand beaches and crystal-clear water. The few islands that are inhabited are mainly home to peaceful rural communities and include the “Big Three” – Lantau, the largest and most developed and the more traditionally-inclined Cheung Chau and Lamma islands.
