Embark on a journey to the 8th Century World Heritage site of Pakerisan Valley, as we delve into Bali’s historical and religious roots. Our day begins at Bali’s first Hindu temple, nestled in a village that grew around its sacred aura. Guided by a Balinese spiritualism researcher, we explore a jungle temple, an ancient meeting point for priests crafting the year’s calendar. The personal experience unfolds with insights into connecting with the divine. Moving to Tirtha Mengening, a sacred but seldom-visited temple, a Balinese priest conducts a purification ritual, followed by a dip in Holy Spring-fed pools. A unique lunch amidst ancient rice fields precedes a blessing ceremony overlooking Bali’s coastline and Pura Pegulingan—a rare blend of Buddhist and Hindu architecture of the 10th century. The day concludes with meditation guided by our priest.

To begin our journey, we will visit Taman Ayun, a temple that holds royal significance and is located in Mengwi. Built in 1634, it is a vital part of the Subak, a complex rice-field irrigation system recognized by UNESCO in 2012. The expansive complex is surrounded by a broad moat, symbolizing its status as the mythological abode of the gods. Our next stop is Alas Kedaton, a megalithic sacred temple located within a forest inhabited by mischievous monkeys and hundreds of large bats.
Following a delightful lunch at a local restaurant, we will proceed to Tugu Canggu for a class on creating Djamoe. Djamoe is a blend of traditional herbs and spices that can be consumed or applied directly to the body and is believed to possess healing properties. This ancient remedy has served various purposes, from curing ailments to inspiring love. It originates from the island of Java and has been utilized for centuries by both humble villagers and the “Keraton” royal family, contributing to its widespread use across Indonesia. To conclude the day, we will gather at Tanah Lot, the most photographed temple in Bali, to witness the mesmerizing sunset over the west coast of the island.
