Established in 1624 by the Dutch East India Company as Fort Zeelandia, Tainan is the oldest urban area in Taiwan as well as its former capital. A powerhouse of local history, these days, the city is also famed as the island’s food capital, having given the world specialities including “Danzi noodles” and “coffin bread”, and as a bastion of traditional arts, crafts, and architecture.
