The most prominent feature on the map of Cambodia, stretching across the northwest section of the country is one of the largest freshwater lakes in Asia, Tonle Sap Lake. Cruise in Trails of Indochina’s traditional luxury wooden vessel, Sarus, and embark on an adventure that teaches guests about the lake, its biodiversity and the Khmer rural culture. Offering sunset tours departing from Siem Reap, as well as green and dry season half day tours, Sarus is exclusive to Trails of Indochina’s trade partners and their clients. Reaching nearly 14 meters in length, the traditional wooden boat sits perfectly on the water amongst the natural surroundings, creating a wonderful sunset cruise setting. At sunset, passengers on board are invited to enjoy a glass of wine and canapés, watch the lake’s peaceful beauty unfold, and witness the locals on the return to their fish farms with the catch of the day.
This morning you will start out by cyclo for a three hour tour through the streets of Phnom Penh to admire the mix of Khmer and French colonial architecture. A local professional escort will explain the history, structure and style of the buildings such as the Old Post Office, the Railway Station and the Central Market. Some of the buildings you are able to enter and explore the interior in more depth while others can only be observed from the outside. Cambodia’s most famous architect, H.E. Vann Molyvann had a big hand in developing many of the structures you admire today.
Discover Phnom Penh in more detail with a tour led by a French Anthropologist and historian who has been based in Cambodia for many years. The tour will follow the city’s history through five distinct periods and pay a visit to some intriguing sites including Post Office square, the Hainan temple, the station square, the official buildings surrounding Vat Phnom, the former Cantonese temple, the providence church, the Chinese district, Vat Unnalom, and several important monuments around town.
Enjoy a private gourmet picnic lunch in a wonderful setting on the grounds of the temples of Angkor. At lunch time, a comfortable picnic table is set up just for your group. Lunch is served while you admire the backdrop of magnificent Khmer temples, pagodas or the view of lush paddy fields.
Visit Theam House, a unique Siem Reap Atelier and artist studio after a day exploring Angkor Wat and the surrounding temples. View various savoir–faire and works–in–progress at the workshop including painting, fine sculpting and lacquering. Be greeted with a cocktail and light khmer snack upon arrival, enjoy a private tour of the showroom and studio while interacting with a local artesian, learning more about how emotion and knowledge can be shared in various artistic and cultural fields.
